Inequality between genders is a bitter fact that we as a society are still far away from having fixed. Especially in male-dominated professions, antiquated role models are omnipresent. This causes often discrimination against women on a subtle but no less severe level.
Medicine proves to be one of many examples in this regard. In the context of this social media campaign for the Stadtspital Zürich, we wanted to address this problem directly in order to find out first-hand how female doctors experience their everyday lives and what absurd prejudices they still have to fight against in the 21st century.
To address this issue, we conducted interviews with female doctors of different age groups at the Stadtspital Zürich. Some guiding questions were intended to provide a basic structure for the conversation. However, it was important to us to offer space in this social media campaign for any topic-related expression of opinion. The resulting conversations, which turned out to be very personal, offer viewers authentic insights into the current state of our health system in terms of equality between men and women.
Most importantly, however, is the realisation that there are ways to reinvent existing structures in order to move relentlessly towards the goal of equality until we finally achieve it. The Stadtspital Zürich have recognised this. But there are enough others whom we as a society still have to bring to this realisation.
